Dragon Con 2013 Panel Schedule

Got my (tentative) Dragon Con guest schedule:

  • “High Concept” – There is fantasy and high fantasy. Is there high SF? Fri 8/30, 1PM, Embassy A-B (Hyatt).
  • “YA Short Fiction” – Often short stories fill the gaps in between novels, or offer new character insights. Here’s how YA authors craft these bite-sized tales. Fri 8/30, 5:30PM, A707 (Marriott).
  • “Folklore in Fantasy” – Some stories are timeless, pervading the folklore and mythology of every culture on Earth; fantasy literature is no exception. Sat 8/31, 5:30PM, Embassy C (Hyatt).
  • “The Future of Fantastic Fiction” Mon 9/2, 4PM, Embassy D-F (Hyatt).

Hope to see folks there!

New Short Story Ebook: The Storyteller’s Wife FREE on Amazon for Kindle

This is the last week of my reprint one-ebook-a-week summer publication schedule, and to send it up with a bang, I’m making this week’s ebook, “The Storyteller’s Wife,” available for FREE from Amazon for the next five days (from July 30th through Aug. 3rd).

“The Storyteller’s Wife” was originally published in the June, 2005, issue of Realms of Fantasy and was reprinted in French in the Fall, 2005, issue (#19) of Faeries:

Janie’s life comes crashing around her when she finds the suicide note her husband left. But when the paramedics come, it’s not her beloved Tom they wheel out on the gurney but a wooden manikin, a changeling left by the faerie folk to deceive them. What do the fey want with Tom and how can Janie get him back? To find the answer to both questions, Janie must confront the Queen of Faerie herself and make a heartrending choice.

New Short Story Ebook: Body and Soul Art

This week’s new ebook is “Body and Soul Art.” Originally published in issue #14 (2004) of Andromeda Spaceways Inflight Magazine and reprinted in the anthology The Best of Andromeda Spaceways Inflight Magazine: Horror, Tehani Wessely (ed.), June 2007:

In the dim shadows of the Garden of Earthly Delights tattoo parlour, immortal players of an ancient story continue their feuding, caught in a perpetual web of jealousy and betrayal. Russell is a simple man trying to remake himself, hoping a new tattoo will symbolize a turning point in his nondescript life. But he finds more than he bargained for when his skin becomes canvas and battlefield for their unending strife.

“Body and Soul Art” made me squirm…Foster does a good job portraying Rusell’s agony, both physical and mental, as he wrestles with the consequences of his decisions.

Their mother’s spite drives Marfa one winter’s night into the bitter cold, but astonishing them all, Marfa returns with violets, strawberries, and the favor of Lord Frost. However, having Father Winter as an admirer has its own perils, and Prascovia vows to save her beloved sister from Winter’s attentions.

A lush re-imagining of the Russian “Jack Frost” fairy tale.

New Short Story Ebook: Biba Jibun

This week’s new ebook is “Biba Jibun.” Originally published in Apex Magazine, #23, April, 2011; produced as an audio podcast by Pseudopod in January of 2012; and reprinted in the anthology The Book of Apex: Volume 3:

Every night as I sleep on my futon, I dream that I’m a rabbit, running on a river of moonlight. My fur is white, my legs strong and swift, and I’m going to see Mama.

Papa said that Mama left because she was one of the obake, the spirit folk. She tricked him into marrying her when he was a rich man and could buy her French perfume and trinkets from Cartier’s. But then Papa’s company got bought by a Western interest which wasn’t of a mind to buy Papa along with it. When next the full moon beckoned, Mama turned into a silver rabbit scented with Envy by Gucci, a platinum Bulgari watch around her throat, and flew out into the night.
