Long holiday update and happy birthday to me!

Yikes. Just tried getting caught up on my LJ friends list. Urg. Well, I tried.

Everyone’s asleep, even Hobkin.

But I’m wide awake.

Got back from seeing Matthew’s folks yesterday. The drive was a bit grueling toward the end so I spent most of my birthday crashed out on the couch, recovering.

We sent Hobkin to his godmother’s for “Christmas camp” (she has 10 skunks herself–many of them rescues) during the time we were out of town and I was quite anxious about him. But, as it turns out, he had a blast playing with her crew and, though quite happy to see us, from all reports had a great time. It’s such a relief having someone we trust so completely to watch over him for us.

Then we drove to Illinois. Straight. Twelve and a half hours in a car. We made excellent time, though. Showed up on their doorstep (forgetting about the time zone change) at 6:45 AM. Heh. Ooops. They came shuffling to the door in their housecoats, looking rather bleary. It was very cute. Did I mention that I really love Matthew’s parents? We shooed them back to bed and did the Christmas elf thing, unpacking all the presents and setting them under the tree.

Matthew kept his nocturnal hours for the most part, so I got to spend a lot of time chatting with his parents in the morning as we waited for him to wake up. The recent economy has not been good for them. They had a lot of investments that have lost a lot of money. I’m worried about them, especially since Matthew’s father isn’t in very good health.

They talked a lot about moving, which they need to do. The house is too big for them to maintain and they have too much stuff. And therein lies the problem. They really need to get rid of stuff, and they’re having a very hard time doing so. So much of it has sentimental value, plus Matthew inherited his packratitis from them.

I’m also really sad at the idea of Christmas not at that house. I learned to love Christmas in the house Matthew grew up in. It’s going to be hard when that changes. But Christmas is where the loved ones are. No matter where Matthew’s parents end up, it’ll be joyful.

Because of the funky date situation (Christmas on Wednesday, agh), and that we were on the road during Christmas proper, we opted to prolong Christmas (we’re still in “Christmas” actually). We opened our presents on Saturday. I loved everything I got!

Not my big holiday update entry

I was going to post a big holiday catch-up entry, but this isn’t it. I was just scrolling through my friend’s list in a vain effort not to fall too far behind, and I realized something. I have seen more racist comments on LiveJournal than I have seen, heard, or experienced since grade school.

I just saw someone say in a comment “fucking chink,” about a Chinese person and actually mean it. I haven’t heard the term “chink” since sixth grade when I had to deal with some exceptionally unpleasant racism in school. And thinking back, I realized that the amount of overt racism I’ve seen people express has jacked up since I started keeping a blog here.

It makes me sad.

*Sigh* Peace on Earth, goodwill towards everyone. Please.

Insomnia leads to bookkeeping and skunk pix on Christmas Eve

So, I planned to sleep in today. Did I? No, of course not.

The rain has been pouring out of the sky like someone with a huge bucket is up there bailing like a maniac. It’s been non-stop for hours. Woke me up, woke Hobkin up. So Hobkin sprawled on my lap while I did a little end-of-year bookkeeping.

In 2002, I spent $190 on postage, marketing my writing. That’s an almost 100% increase from my postage expenses last year. Yikes. Okay, I nearly doubled the number of manuscripts I have in circulation, but also, I’ve been trying to submit more to markets that accept electronic submissions in order to save on postage. Guess that last USPS rate hike in July really hurt. Wow.

Well, it’s all tax deductible.

To cheer myself up, I followed Hobkin around with the digicam.

First off, I bribed him with an “Apple Pupover.”

There’s a business that had a little booth at the mall for the holiday season this year called “Brown Dog Barkery”. We saw them, were curious–being always on the lookout for new treats for Hobkin–and glanced over the ingredients of these folks’ dog biscuits.

Apple Pupover ingredients: whole wheat and white flours, rolled oats, apple, vegetable oil and whole eggs.

Wow. Very wholesome. So we bought a 1/2 lb bag. And Hobkin loves them!

It put him in a better mood for the camera.

Beginning of the holidays!

Today was my last day of work for the year. I’m taking off the rest of this week and next week. Woohoo! I suspect I’ll be a bit sparse on LJ for the next couple weeks with all the Xmas flurry and celebratory revelry.

Christmas shopping is done except for a pair of DVDs for Matthew’s brother + wife. We had them all picked out at Best Buy and were holding them in our hot little paws, but then we saw the checkout line. It stretched around the side of the store to the back wall. Gah! What I couldn’t figure out was why they didn’t open more registers. There were three closed register spots and plenty of people in blue shirts wandering around. Why they couldn’t nab one of those and stick them on a register, I don’t know.

But anyway, we had tickets to see Two Towers, and realized there was no way we were making the movie if we went through the line, so we had to put the DVDs back and scamper out.

The Two Towers. It was big. It was shiny. It was long. Yes, it was long. There were parts of it I really loved. Gollum does indeed kick Jar-Jar’s CGI-created butt. And the Ents were amazing. Loved the Ents. But, like with the books, there were sections that felt like they needed a bit of judicious trimming. It’s all about pacing. But still, I enjoyed it. Much shiny, fantasy epic fun.

The pred has given me the shakes. So, I’m not sick anymore, but I’ve got a hairline muscle tremor running through my system. Manual dexterity and equilibrium are things one takes for granted until they get compromised. The shakes aren’t even all that bad. I can overcome them if I concentrate, but if I forget, minor calamities occur. Muscle tremor-related accidents to date: milk sloshings at dinner x2, knife dropped several times resulting in one minor cut while preparing meals for Hobkin, pred pills spilled over desk at work, and clicking closed several applications that I had intended to maximize instead. Argh.

I’ve got a call in with my Rheumatologist. I suspect my dose should be lowered, or I need to consider weaning off of it since I’m currently symptom free.

And finally, Matthew has a cold now. Sigh. If it’s not one thing . . .

But it’s almost Christmas! Hurray! Merry almost-Christmas everyone!

From yesterday’s agenda:

My goals from yesterday:

Today, I want to soak in the hot tub, go Christmas shopping, see a movie, eat Christmas cookies and candy, and wrap prezzies!

Okay, I didn’t soak in the hot tub because my hot tubbing time got side-swiped by dancing around the house after hearing about my sale. But that’s a trade-off I’m willing to make. We did, though, engage in a massive amount of Christmas shopping and cookie and candy eating. And I wrapped about half a dozen prezzies. The movie we saw was Long Kiss Goodnight upstairs in our home theater (a fine holiday flick!). We were going to see Two Towers but when we got home, Hobkin was so lonely we couldn’t leave him again. Hoping to catch it today.

But we’re worried about our laser disc player. It’s fairly new as laser disc players go. We’ve got two of them actually, and our first one is much older and doesn’t have this problem. But I think there’s a belt loose or something in the mechanism that switches sides. When the movie went from side A to B, there was this loud whirring, sort of grinding noise. And Matthew had to power the player completely down in order to get the tray to open at all.

Where the hell are we going to find a shop that works on laser disc players? Argh. We need a DVD burner so we can transfer our huge collection of laser discs to DVD. Crap.

But, in better news, the editor of the In the Outposts of Beyond anthology asked me for a long bio–he said around 200 words. All the bios I’ve made up ’till now have been in the under 100-word range area, so I get to spend some time coming up with a “meatier” one. Hmmm . . .

Sale! Bing!

Remember the anthology editor who said he really liked the beginning of one of my stories? It turns out he really liked the rest of it too!

I just sold my novelette “A Little Soul Music” to the In the Outposts of Beyond anthology!

Woohoo! A very nice bit of early holiday cheer indeed! Woo!

I feel so much better, vegan fish, and Firefly

All hail the pred! Hurray for prednisone! Or else my immune system is finally feeling sheepish about the huge hissy fit it’s been having and has finally decided to settle down. I feel okay. My internal thermostat is still inclined to wonkiness, but the muscle aches are gone, as is the eye-explodingly unpleasant headache. Hurray! I really hope my system isn’t just luring me into a false sense of “I’m well.” I’m done being sick, please.

To celebrate my feeling better, Matthew took me out to eat yesterday. We went to Sam’s Gourmet Vegetarian Paradise (5750 Roswell Road – Atlanta 404-252-8878). I think I’ve mentioned them before. Totally vegan menu with a dizzying array of fake meat dishes like “Roasted Famingo” and “Braised Lam.” I had the Mandarin Fish. Yummy! If you’re an Atlantan, I highly, highly recommend them. The waitperson said that they were moving to a Midtown location in a couple months. While I’m sure it’s probably a better location for them, I’m bummed. They’re reasonably close to us where they’re at now.

Watched what was obviously the original Firefly pilot last night. Okay, whatever Fox committee decided to air something else as the intro to the series needs to be shot. A lot. It was so much better than the original first episode they aired. Actually, the last several Firefly episodes have been really good. I was just starting to think: “Hey, this show has potential. I’m seeing the trademark Joss genius coming through. I’m getting sucked in.” And, of course, Fox cancels it. Sigh. Dammit.

Today, I want to soak in the hot tub, go Christmas shopping, see a movie, eat Christmas cookies and candy, and wrap prezzies! So many holiday festivities to catch up on, so little time! RAH!

Christmas stuff, writing, and I’m still @#*$&! sick

Haven’t been very active on LJ recently. Sitting at the computer is just too exhausting. I am so tired of being sick. I thought I was over the worst of it, but then I get hammered by another bout of the sickies. Dammit. My fever keeps cresting and dropping. I feel like I’m on a roller coaster of hot-cold-hot-cold. My head feels like little men with hammers are trying to break free from the inside, and my muscles feel like I’ve run two marathons and then been hit by a wrecking ball. It hurts to lie down and I’m too tired to sit up. Stupid immune system. It needs a firm kick in the shins.

But I got another prescription from my rheumatologist. Prednisone. Whee. More steroids. Hopefully, these meds’ll do the trick.

On the writing front, I’ve hit a snag in the novel progress. I’m just having a hard time getting the words to come out. So, I took a little break from it and penned a short folktale. Two thousand words came rattling out sweet as I could want in exactly two days, start to finish. Not too shabby. Tossed it up on Critters. Not in any hurry as the main market I’d want to send it to (Cricket) is still looking over the re-write of my kitsune story and I don’t like having more than one thing under consideration at the same market. Seems like a bad idea to compete against myself.

We’ve still got a lot of Christmas shopping to do. This whole me being sick thing continues to set us back. But Matthew has been making every effort to make the holidays cheery even with me twitching feverishly on the couch most of the time. This has mostly translated into festive dinners. Tuesday he made portabello mushroom ravioli with fresh garlic bread. And if that wasn’t enough, he baked a Dutch apple pie for dessert! Yummy! And yesterday he made a mushroom rice casserole with the same mushroom ‘n onion gravy from Thanksgiving with faux sausage on the side. Mmmm. My hubby is quite the kitchen santa.

Um, but I’ve resolved not to get on the scale until next year. It’s just safer that way.

Haven’t seen Two Towers yet. Hope to this weekend. I’ve been trying to avoid any and all spoilers . . . not that I don’t know the story, but still.

Fantasm, no Pimps & Hos, and Shakespeare tonight

Went to the Fantasm staff meeting yesterday. Agh. The traffic was miserable. Road construction bad. Evil, evil road construction. Made it there nearly half an hour late. Sigh. But Matthew was able to get with several people he needed to, while I tried not to get in anyone’s way and got to smile and wave at several folks I haven’t seen since, hmm, last Fantasm.

The high point was going out for dinner at the Melting Pot with yakdog, girlsonfilm, weswilson, Andy-of-no-LJ, and Debgirl001. Excellent fondue, complicated cooking tong arrangements and dipping sauces, and good company. What more could anyone ask for?

Went home afterward to check on the little Hob and get our pimp/ho costumes constructed and as soon as we walked through the door, Hobkin launched himself into our arms (well, at my ankle really) and clung. Poor little guy. He was very lonely and very huggy.

Feeling not 100% still, and not having a heart of ice, we decided, reluctantly, that the best course of action would be to skip out on the “Pimps and Hos” party. Pook. Matthew had his “Cosmic Superpimp” ensemble (complete with obscene ray gun) all set out, and I was going to reprise my “Jailbait Girl” costume. But, considering how touch-and-go my immune system has been, immersing me in smoke, alcohol, and a very late night out just didn’t seem like a good idea. Sigh. Hate being sick.

We’ve got tickets to the Shakespeare Tavern tonight to see A Christmas Carol. Almost forgot with all the busy weekend things whirling about.
